GP Online Services

GP Online Services
26 September 2018

Nearly 14 million patients across England are now securely using online services with their family doctor.

GP online services can be used by patients to:

  • Book appointments
  • Order repeat prescriptions
  • View their records and results.

There has been a 42% increase in the number of patients nationally who are using online services in the last year – a figure that the NHS in the Portsmouth and south east Hampshire area is keen to increase.

Dr Andrew Holden, the primary care lead for South Eastern Hampshire and Fareham and Gosport Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), said: “Patients who use online GP services are saving their own time and money by accessing services from the comfort of their homes and obviously helping to ease pressure on GPs and their staff.

“This is just one example of how we are increasing the use of technology in the NHS to empower people to take more control of their health, wellbeing and care.”

Around 25% of patients – 13.9 million – are known to be registered to use online services across the UK.

Other benefits include avoiding waiting on the phone when trying to book routine appointments; viewing parts of their GP record, including information about medication, allergies, vaccinations, previous illnesses and test results; and being able to see clinical correspondence such as hospital discharge summaries and outpatient appointment letters.

The service is free to everyone registered with a GP practice.

To start using online services, patients should take photo ID (like a passport) and proof of their address (such as a utility bill) to their GP practice.

If you don’t have ID, then either a member of staff will have to confirm their identity or answer questions about their personal information in their GP record. This is to ensure a high level of security as you would expect with patient data.

Patients are asked to complete a short registration form. Once signed up, they will receive a letter with details of their unique username, password and instructions on how to log in.
